At the Barcelona Games in 1992 the Macedonian athletes participated as independent com
petitors because until that time the MOC had not yet become a member of the IOC. Therefore, the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 was their first edition ever of the OG under the flag of the Republic of Macedonia. And, as far as the winter Games are concerned - the first participation of the Macedonian Olympic Team is related to Nagano 1998.The Macedonian athletes have thus far won 12 Olympic medals, all of them at a summer Olympics: 2 gold, 5 silver, and 5 bronze medals.
The majority of those medal-winners have become members of the MOC's Hall of Fame, which is a special honor for every athlete and sports worker in the country, The rigorous criteria, which apply not only to the results achieved during one's sports career, were thus far met by 17 athletes and sports experts. Each member of the Hall of Fame is awarded with a statuette, a golden ring and a pin.
